Don Julio González began his journey in the world of tequila in 1942. He soon realized that to create a tequila that stands apart, one must control every aspect of the process - from the cultivation of the agave to the bottling of the final product. He then established his distillery, La Primavera, and spent nearly forty years perfecting the craft that would produce extraordinary tequila with every bottle.

At the time, there were very low expectations for a bottle of tequila. It was the drink of the people, something kept under the table, not proudly displayed like an excellent wine.

Don Julio saw the potential for tequila to become something greater. On his own, he began to experiment. He devoted himself to the agave plant and developed his own method of planting and harvesting. He tried using more mature agave and using different parts of the plant. He painstakingly perfected the distilling process. All in an effort to arrive at a truly excellent tequila.

Don Julio never thought to make money from what he created; it was purely a labor of love. However, people began to notice. Friends and neighbors would drop by to help themselves to “Don Julio’s tequila”.

It was not until his family held a big party for him, inviting friends as well as business associates. As a parting gift each guest received a bottle of Don Julio’s tequila. The bottles themselves were unusual. Instead of tall and slim they were short and wide. Don Julio wanted his guests to be able to talk across the table without looking around a bottle. This distinctive shape has now become synonymous with the refinement and excellence of Tequila Don Julio.

The gifts caused a sensation. Everyone wanted more. Distributors immediately placed orders for more of the tequila than could be produced. Soon, word spread. Without any advertising or promotion Tequila Don Julio quickly became the most desired tequila in Mexico. Since those days, connoisseurs around the world have esteemed Tequila Don Julio as the first true luxury tequila. Finally, the world is discovering what Mexico already knows. That it is passion above all else that defines excellence.
